About the Assessor
The Assessor is a local government official who estimates the value of real property within the Town’s boundaries. This value is converted into an assessment, which is one component in the computation of real property tax bills.

About the Office
The Town of Malta has an appointed Assessor who is selected by the Town Board for a period of six years. The assessor and staff maintain the assessment roll – the document that contains the assessed value of every property within the town. To do this, the physical description, inventory and value estimate of every parcel of real property in the municipality is kept up-to-date.

The assessor keeps informed regarding new construction within the town and major changes to existing structures in order to maintain their most current value. The assessor also approves and administers qualified property tax exemption applications for:

    STAR CREDIT CHECKS
    
    This memo applies only to new homeowners who purchased their home on or after March 1st, 2015. As you should be aware by now, all new homeowners applying for STAR or Senior Enhanced STAR no longer do so at their local assessor's office. (Existing owners who already had STAR will remain with the Assessor's Office and may still apply with the assessor to upgrade to Senior Enhanced by March 1st of the year they attain Age 65.) New homeowners must register with New York State Department of Taxation & Finance. Those homeowners will receive a check instead of an exemption on their school tax bill. New York State Department of Taxation & Finance mailed out both Basic & Enhanced STAR Credit Checks to those individuals who successfully registered by July 1st of 2016 and were deemed eligible. It has come to our attention that there is a possibility the Senior citizens may not have been sent the correct STAR saving amount. If you are a Senior citizen and believe your STAR Credit Check is incorrect, NYS Dept. of Taxation & Finance wants you to call their STAR Hotline at (518) 457-2036. If you received no check at all (Basic or Senior) and believe you should have, please call this same number. They have asked that you call them directly, not you local town officials as there is nothing we can do to assist in this matter.

The assessor reviews every transfer of real property in the municipality. The basic information on the buyer, seller, and sale price is reviewed for accuracy. Assessment records are then updated. These are public records and are available at the links below.
